2013, can you believe it?

The end of the 2nd quarter is January 25th.
All 8th graders will complete a "Cube" research project!

Lesson 10: “Cube Project”                                                                                Individual or Partner

1.   Select a simple manufactured object to research.

2.      Use a variety of sources (at least 3) to find information about the object’s major materials.

3.      Create a research “cube” and present to the class.

1 : something made from raw materials by hand or by machinery

2   a: the process of making wares by hand or by machinery especially when carried on systematically

        with division of labor

b: a productive industry using mechanical power and machinery

3 : the act or process of producing something

5 sides of your cube will cover different areas of research about your object.

v  Function: what does it do? What is it used for?

v  History of the object: discovered by? First made and used? Changes over time with the help of technology?

v  Major materials that make up the object.

v  Why these materials were chosen: what properties make them good for making the object?

v  Origin of one major material: what is the raw material that it comes from? Where is it found, and what processes does it undergo to become useable?

On this paper, include your bibliography. This should be a list of at least 3 sources you used to find information about your object. You can use 1 internet resource, 1 book, magazine or newspaper, and 1 reference book/encyclopedia.

Bibliography:

Solid, Liquid, Gas.....oh my!

How are your "Phase Change" Cornell Notes?
Do you have 3 additional questions about them, and answers on the left-side page in complete sentences?

What did you predict the temperature readings would show during phase changes?

Hello Again!!!  What a crazy, crazy week...no school, no activites!

I am glad to be back at CMS and hope you are too!  We have such an opportunity now to study solids, liquids and gases, as they relate to the wildfires! My favorite word this week ... "PARTICULATES!!"

Get ready to research and analyze wildfire issues, and come up with strategies and solutions to deal with air quality concerns and other environmental problems!!!

YEAHHH SCIENCE!!

Welcome Back!!
The first 3 days of school were great! I am so excited for the year and ready for SCIENCE!!!!!

We are learning how to use Cornell Notes in our science notebooks, making them more interactive and useful.

Parents: Ask your kids about Cornell Notes...pretty cool!

This week will focus on a practice lab, some new vocabulary, and group work. :-)

Final 4th Quarter Project:
We had the opportunity to see “Worldwide Skies (in the planetarium)” from the Pacific Science Center.

You will be choosing 3 constellations to research and explore.
For each constellation, you will need to:
·         Create a poster, model or some kind of visual display (this display can include all 3).
·         Describe or map where it is in the night sky in May or June).
·         Explain the history and beliefs according to at least 1 culture or group of people.
·         Present your project to your class in a creative/interactive way.
Grading:
4 – above and beyond expectations
3 – expectations met at 8th grade level
2 – expectations partially met, but below 8th grade level
1 – expectations not met, far below 8th grade level
